Introduction

‘Ruined buildings dotted the expanse of the beach, their warped forms and gutted foundations giving the merest hint of the metropolis that stood before. Confronted with such destruction, he found it hard to believe that ten years ago Miami had been a thriving, cosmopolitan city of six million.’

Book Club selection for June was Sunshine State, by acclaimed new British novelist James Miller, who read from this, his second and latest book, at Dialogue last month. We will be meeting up to discuss the book, described by the Independent as a ‘novel of compelling imagination… a literary thriller which simmers with energy’, at Café Hilde. For those interested in joining us, it is not too late to pick up a copy of Sunshine State at the Dialogue bookshop — there are even a few signed copies still available. The influence of J.G. Ballard is present in this tale of a dystopian near-future, a postmodern thriller played out in Florida against a backdrop of religious fundamentalism and ecological disaster.
